Apps and hyperconnection: why you're alone after all

Ties and Detachment: The Paradox of the Modern Bachelor

Ah, the loneliness of singles between the ages of 35 and 55, especially those men who have succeeded in their professional careers! You know, the ones who juggle Zoom meetings and dates, but often end up sitting in front of their screens, glass of wine in hand, wondering how they got there. In a world where detachment is an art form, it's time to ask: is this really the solution?

1. Detachment: A Fashionable Philosophy

Links & Detachment: the modern paradox of shining hearts

In Buddhism, detachment is advocated, cutting ties with what holds us back. But let's be honest, when you're a serious businessman, this detachment is more like a one-sided marriage contract. You tell yourself it's better not to get attached, not to bond, to stay "cool and distant." As Drake would say: "I'm more concerned with what do you think of me than what I think of you.” But, in the end, at what cost?

There are those who leave in order to find themselves again.
And then there are those who leave so as never to lose themselves… in the other.

In Eastern philosophies, detachment is glorified.
Cut the ties. Rise above the attachments.
Outwitting the illusion of need.

But in our country — Modern humans, connected but disembodied — the word “link” no longer speaks of wisdom.
He evokes an invisible thread, stretched between the desire to connect and the panic-stricken fear of abandoning oneself.

We have become the architects of a cautious, temporary, carefully limited attachment.
No hindrance. No exposure. No excess.

We share a drink, a bed, a return flight.
But not really a vision.

We exchange our availability, our passions, sometimes our traumas — but rarely our true present.
The one who offers himself without guarantee.
The one who becomes attached without protocol.

2. Superficial Bonds: A Love Cure?

Today, you're all connected via your phones, but how real are those connections? Here we are, scrolling through profiles on dating apps like picking out socks in a store. You have friends "near you" but in reality, you're more alone than ever. As Rihanna says, "You're the one that I love, and I'm saying goodbye," but who really wants to say goodbye to love before it's even had a chance to knock on the door?

The era of lightweight links

Never in history have we been so connected.
Instant messaging, calls to the other side of the world, shared calendar, stylish avatars on LinkedIn.

And yet, never so detached.
Lukewarm presences, compressed relationships, emotions diluted by practicality.

There's a lot of talk. There's a lot of showing off.
But we don't confide in each other.

Not really.

We maintain the relationship like we maintain a car:
just enough to keep it running, never enough to make it an epic.

We prefer to “see where it leads” rather than choose a direction.
We prefer to “let things happen” rather than take responsibility for a movement.

Because we know what true attachment costs.
Because we remember it. Very well, in fact.

3. Traveling to Escape: An Illusion of Freedom

You travel, you detach, you move... but what does it really bring? Temporary bonds, fleeting encounters, but never anything concrete. You're afraid of becoming attached, as if every link were a threat to your precious emotional comfort. Is this fear of suffering really sweeter than the pain of a broken heart? As a contemporary sage would say, "Life is like a box of chocolates, sometimes you come across a sticky toffee," and that toffee is love.

Move, leave, seduce. Start again.

Travel has become an elegant refuge.
We move, we explore, we multiply the settings and the opportunities.

But we always keep one suitcase open:
the one who says "I'm just passing through".

So we create.
Links.
Beautiful, intense, but perishable.

Like a glass of champagne on a Bangkok terrace: sparkling, but already lukewarm by the third sip.

We prefer movement to vertigo.
Elsewhere at anchor.

Because to become attached, truly, is to risk seeing oneself.
And sometimes, to fall.

4. The Inevitable Solitude

So there you are, cultivating superficial relationships, avoiding exposure, not opening up too much. You think it's better to avoid suffering, but the truth is that you're condemning yourself to a loneliness that is very real. Deep down, you know that these temporary bonds are no substitute for the pain of a genuine connection, of a knowing glance, of a simple, heart-warming hug. This pain may be less pleasant, but it's also infinitely more human.

Brilliant protection... but empty

By dint of practicing detachment as a social virtue, we end up confusing protection with desert.

We stay on the surface. We stay stylish.
We remain free.

But every departure that is not acknowledged leaves a mark.
Every connection abandoned too soon becomes an absence that we camouflage under full schedules and polite silences.

And in this carefully orchestrated drama, only one thing ends up jarring:
the lack.

Not a lack of love.
The lack of vibration shared.
A presence that looks at us, and recognizes us — beyond role, beyond efficiency, beyond control.

Somewhere I belong

Perhaps, deep down, it's not so much the relationship itself that hurts…
But the lack of a place to truly experience it.

A place where one can lay down the armor.
A place where the heart, too, has a right to exist.

What if it was no longer a question of choosing between painful attachment and sterile independence?

What if true audacity today lay in putting down roots... without becoming rigid?
To become attached… without becoming alienated?
To create a living connection — fluid, demanding, but fully embodied?

You already know how to succeed at everything.
But perhaps the real challenge begins there:
Allowing yourself to belong. To someone. To a shared project. To a shared journey.

Not to lock you up.
To amplify you.

Conclusion

Detachment may seem seductive, but by running away, you're missing out on something precious: authentic love. So, are you ready to take that risk? To tie yourself down? Because deep down, somewhere, there's a connection waiting for you. And that connection could well be the greatest adventure of your life.
